What’s the Deal with Trigger Warnings?

Doesn’t bringing them up defeat the purpose?

Every so often, in the two hours I waste just prior to sleeping scrolling through my phone in bed I’ll see a video where there’s a rant or some altercation to feed the itch I need to have drama in my life but not be involved in it a trigger warning will come up.

I understand, though admittedly not very deeply (and thankfully so) that traumatic events can be so overwhelmingly difficult that going into a related issue can bring back a lot of the feelings of that event. But every time I see a trigger warning I always think — well gee, you just brought it up. And what really is being triggered anyway? Is it just for people who have experienced traumatic events?

Triggered?

The whole concept of triggering gained a lot of traction came about for me when it became a meme. It was something that the average 4chan browser would joke about the feminazis always saying — synonymous with anger. And while it’s not taken very seriously in those circles, is it really just about getting angry at a given situation?
