If you’re anything like me, you’re a procrastinator. You hesitate to start things, you’d rather be doing something else. It’s so much easier just to put on a movie and just do whatever rather than working.

Recently I learned something though.

Not finishing things makes it easier to start doing things.

I have this habit of putting on a movie while I have breakfast, and I’ve been slowly realizing that it’s getting in the way of doing other things. I fall into this pattern of “I’ll just finish watching it” and all my motivation drains away.

There are periods in my life when I have a good swing at doing things. I am really good at maintaining work habits or study habits for a long time. Then I get complacent.. or maybe a better word might be cocky. I start thinking that I’m good at keeping this up, I’m a master of my habits and I can just do it. That’s exactly the point where things mess up for me. I start saying things like, “I’ll just do this really quick and get back to doing that other important thing that I want to get done.”

Realizing this made me want to start a new pattern. I think it might be true that I am quite decent at starting and maintaining new habits for a while, I’m good at setting up routines and keeping them up for extended periods of time. I once had a…
